Both platforms start at $0, so this is not a story about a cheaper monthly plan. On cards the two are close, and Square Free is actually a slightly higher online rate than a paid plan. Where the picture changes is stablecoins. Square has no USDC option at all, and a SaturnShift stablecoin payment does not touch the card networks, so there is no 2.9% card cost on it.

Payments

SaturnShift combines cards, ACH bank payments, and USDC and USDT stablecoins in one checkout, on one platform, with one dashboard and one reconciliation. A customer who wants to pay by card and a customer who wants to pay in USDC use the same store.

Square has its own crypto story worth stating plainly, because it is easy to get wrong. Square now accepts Bitcoin over the Lightning Network, and a merchant can settle in Bitcoin or auto-convert to dollars. What Square does not accept is stablecoins. There is no USDC or USDT rail. So if your customers want to pay in dollar-denominated stablecoin, SaturnShift supports it and Square does not. If they want to pay in Bitcoin, Square supports it today and SaturnShift has that on the roadmap.

Stablecoin payments are also final once settled, so there is no chargeback on them. Card payments on either platform still follow normal card dispute rules.

Building the store

SaturnShift takes an AI-first approach. You describe your business, add your products or services with a name and price, and SaturnShift generates the storefront copy, the headline, the About section and the item descriptions, then you review and publish. Your prices, contact details and business facts stay exactly as you entered them. The pitch is faster and simpler setup, not a more powerful site editor.

Square gives you a template-based site builder inside a much larger commerce suite, and shares one catalog and inventory across its online store, its POS, and its retail and appointments products. That breadth is a genuine strength if you sell in person as well as online. It is also more system than a business that only sells online needs.

Services and subscriptions

A SaturnShift storefront sells one-time products, one-time services, and existing subscription plans, and you can choose which plans appear on the store. Both platforms support recurring billing. On SaturnShift, recurring billing is card-based today and lives on the Full Suite plan, so it is worth checking that against how you want to bill.

Square supports subscriptions and appointments as part of its wider ecosystem, which again reflects its strength as a broad commerce platform.

Store and payments in one place

Because a SaturnShift store is built on the payment platform rather than connected to one afterwards, an online sale carries its context with it. You can see what was bought, the payment, the fulfillment method, and the order in Store Orders, alongside the rest of your SaturnShift activity, with the same refunds, reporting and settlement the rest of your account uses.

Does SaturnShift calculate sales tax?

Yes. You can turn on automatic sales tax for your store, and SaturnShift uses Stripe Tax to calculate applicable sales tax at checkout, based on the tax registrations you have added and your customer’s location. You configure your business address and registrations inside SaturnShift. Square also calculates sales tax, so treat this as table stakes on both. Neither platform determines where you are required to register, and neither files or remits for you.

Is SaturnShift cheaper than Square Online?

Both have a $0 plan, so entry cost is the same. On card processing they are close: Square Free is 3.3% + 30¢ online and Square paid plans are 2.9% + 30¢, while SaturnShift runs cards on Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢ plus a small platform fee. The real difference is not the card rate. It is that SaturnShift also accepts ACH and USDC and USDT natively, and a stablecoin payment carries no card-network cost at all.

Does Square accept stablecoins or USDC?

No. Square added Bitcoin acceptance over the Lightning Network, which you can settle in Bitcoin or auto-convert to dollars, but Square does not accept stablecoins such as USDC or USDT. SaturnShift accepts USDC and USDT on four networks and settles them to USDC on Base.

Can SaturnShift replace Square for my business?

It depends on how you sell. If you run a physical shop or restaurant and lean on in-person POS, hardware, and shared retail inventory, Square is built for that and SaturnShift is not. If you mainly sell online and want a fast store with cards, ACH and stablecoins in one checkout, SaturnShift is the lighter fit.

Can I sell services, not just products, with SaturnShift?

Yes. Services are a first-class item type. A consultant selling a session and a shop selling a physical item use the same catalog and checkout, and your storefront is worded for what you actually sell.

Does SaturnShift handle shipping and pickup?

SaturnShift supports local pickup and flat-rate or free shipping on physical items. It does not do live carrier-calculated rates or printed shipping labels. Square offers deeper shipping, including real-time carrier rates on its higher tier.

Does SaturnShift do in-person POS?

Not yet, but it is close. SaturnShift is an online, payments-first platform today, and in-person acceptance including Tap to Pay is a fast follower on the near-term roadmap. Full point of sale with hardware, shared retail inventory and staff tools is a mature strength of Square, so for a busy retail counter today Square is still the stronger choice.
